  • The United States has reached a tragic milestone: 1 million deaths related to COVID-19. Additionally, 241,000 children have lost a caregiver to COVID-19. The CDC encourages everyone to stay up-to-date on their vaccinations, encourage others to do the same, and take precautions like wearing a mask to reduce COVID-19 levels and staying home when sick to protect those at increased risk of illness and death.
  • The House of Representatives Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis recently released a report detailing the Trump Administration’s close coordination with the meatpacking industry during the pandemic to block worker protections despite clear evidence of the disproportionate risks workers faced.
  • The CDC’s Partnering for Vaccine Equity program recently published bilingual Spanish and English FAQs to address the FDA’s recent decision to limit the use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine due to a rare but serious blood clot risk.

  • Last week, Governor Carney of Delaware signed a paid family & medical leave law that will provide 12 weeks of paid leave to all working Delawareans, except for those employed by seasonal businesses and those with 10 or fewer employees.

Maryland

  • The Maryland Department of Health WIC Program issued a warning about potential issues with homemade infant formula and diluting formula. The warning is in response to the national formula shortage, and The Maryland Department of Health recommends calling your local WIC office, sending Maryland WIC a message on Facebook, or emailing MDH.WIC@Maryland.gov if you have a question about formula returns or replacements.

  • Last week was Women’s Health week, and the Eastern Shore Health District shared a bilingual message encouraging women to schedule their annual well-woman exams through the Health Department. Exams are available on a sliding pay scale for individuals without insurance, and women can call 757-787-5880 in Accomack County or 757-442-6228 in Northampton County to schedule an exam.

North Carolina

  • Children under five years of age who participate in Food and Nutrition Services will begin receiving additional pandemic-related benefits this week, issued via existing Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards. Flowcharts are available in English and Spanish to help caretakers determine if their child is eligible.
  • The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services published a short video in English and Spanish as a reminder of the risks of long COVID and the importance of getting vaccinated, as vaccination decreased the risk of long COVID.

  • A bill in South Carolina that would phase out subminimum wage for people with disabilities has passed both legislative chambers and could become law pending the Governor’s signature. Currently, people with disabilities in South Carolina who work in segregated “work activity centers” make less than $1 per hour.
