This week marks the 3rd anniversary since the U.S. federal government declared a national emergency due to COVID-19, setting in motion a series of extraordinary public policies known collectively as the emergency declarations. The Biden Administration recently announced that the emergency declarations will expire on May 11. For this Weekly Update, we’re taking the opportunity to share some resources on what the future of COVID-19 looks like.

• The emergency declaration allowed programs and services to be activated to serve the most vulnerable populations, including migrant workers. It allowed the emergency authorization of free vaccines, diagnostic tests, and treatments against COVID-19. The Department of Health and Human Services recently released its roadmap outlining how it will continue to address COVID-19, which remains a public health priority.
• Partnering for Vaccine Equity has prepared talking points in English and Spanish surrounding COVID-19 boosters and what the end of the Public Health Emergency implies.
• As the announcement of the end of the public health emergency was made public, our PPP partner, Migrant Clinicians Network (MCN), released their analysis of the implications for access to health care for migrant and immigrant populations.

Delaware

Maryland

Virginia

• The Central Shenandoah Health District will discontinue its COVID-19 hotline on March 30. The Virginia Department of Health will continue to operate a statewide hotline, accessible Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM, at 1-877-829-4682.

North Carolina

• Register now for the North Carolina Farmworker Institute on April 20. This year’s theme is Technology, Equity, and Health.

South Carolina

• The South Carolina Department of Health and Human services will be reinstating eligibility checks for Medicaid on April 1 as a consequence of the end of the public health emergency. This reinstatement of checks could lead to the loss of coverage for many South Carolinians.

Georgia

• Next Monday, March 27, from 9 AM to 2 PM, you can get free COVID-19 and flu vaccines as well as at-hone COVID-19 test kits at the Colombian Consulate in Atlanta! More event info here.
