COVID-19 News

  • The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have both approved the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for children from 6 months to 5 years of age! Vaccinations of this age group will begin in many U.S. states this week. The vaccination dosing and schedule for children in this age group differ a bit from those applied to other age groups, so we’ve summarized key information below:
    • Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 6 months to 4 years is three doses. Children will receive the first two doses three weeks apart and a third dose at least two months after the second dose. The dosage for this age group is one tenth of the adult dose.
    • Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 6 months to 5 years is two doses, administered four weeks or 28 days apart. The dosage for this age group is one fourth of the adult dose.
  • Mexico has now opened vaccination registration for children 5 to 11 years of age. Mexico is using the Pfizer vaccine to vaccinate this age group against COVID-19. Visit this page to register a child to get vaccinated.
  • The CDC has provided additional clarification on how monkeypox is spread in light of the current international outbreak. Unlike COVID-19, monkeypox is not airborne, so individuals who share airspace with someone who has monkeypox are unlikely to contract the virus. However, monkeypox is spread through respiratory secretions, meaning that someone like a caretaker who has close, face-to-face contact with an infected person could become infected via respiratory secretions. Monkeypox also spreads through close contact like touching the rash or lesions of an infected person, kissing, sexual contact, and sharing unwashed clothes or towels. The CDC recommends that infected individuals wear a mask to limit transmission via respiratory secretions. For more information on monkeypox transmission, read the CDC’s recent guidance.
  • Do you know a worker with an H-2B visa who has tried to switch employers? CDM is currently conducting a survey about the “mobility rule,” so please encourage anyone you know who has an H-2B visa and has attempted an employer change to complete the survey (in Spanish) at Contratados.org.
