- The BA.5 subvariant of Omicron has become the dominant variant of the coronavirus in the U.S., as reported by U.S. officials last Tuesday. BA.5 is driving a surge in cases in the U.S., and case numbers are likely underreported due to cases that are identified by at-home tests and not reported. While BA.5 is more effective at evading immunity from vaccination and previous infections, staying up-to-date on vaccination, including boosters, remains the best protection against hospitalization and death.
- The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) now allows pharmacists to prescribe Paxlovid, the antiviral pill used as treatment for COVID-19. As cases rise in the U.S., pharmacist’s new authority to prescribe Paxlovid could increase access to treatment that, in combination with vaccination, can help prevent hospitalization and death.
- The Health Initiative of the Americas at the University of Berkeley recently published English and Spanish factsheets about vaccination for children 6 months and older. These factsheets could be a great reference as you talk to community members about vaccinating children in their household against COVID-19.
- In a press release, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) acknowledged that workers must feel free to participate in DOL investigations without fear of retaliation related to their immigration status. This new FAQ sheet helps guide workers who are involved in labor disputes and would like to request support from DOL in applying for immigration relief.
