COVID-19 News

  • In an historic announcement on Friday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released new guidance to protect migrant and immigrant workers who experience or witness labor or civil rights violations at the workplace.  Undocumented workers or workers on temporary work visas facing labor rights abuses – including COVID-19 hazards – can apply to receive deferred action protection from deportation and access to work authorization for an initial period of two years, with the possibility of extension in some cases. This guidance is intended to support workers in speaking out about unsafe or abusive employers without fear of immigration-related retaliation. Contact info@cdmigrante.org for more information or to get involved in the civil society rapid response effort to support workers in accessing deferred action.
  • While monoclonal antibodies were an effective treatment for COVID-19 for many people during the last two years, monoclonal antibodies are no longer authorized because of their ineffectiveness against current variants. This includes Evusheld, which was previously used to help prevent COVID-19 among immunocompromised people. With less treatment options available, our PPP partner, MCN, is calling on clinicians to ensure that they are prescribing Paxlovid, especially to migrant and immigrant communities. To access Paxlovid treatment, contact your healthcare provider or find a Test-to-Treat site near you.
  • A new study reiterates that masking to control the spread of COVID-19 works. The study focused on schools in Massachusetts that removed mask mandates when the statewise school mask mandate was lifted in February 2022 versus those that sustained their masking requirements through June 2022. The schools without mask mandates had 44.9 more cases per 1,000 staff and students than those with mandates. Check your county’s community level, and if it’s medium or high, consider wearing a high-quality mask in public to protect yourself and others.
