COVID-19 News

  • The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 15 million more people died globally during the pandemic than would have died during the same period under normal circumstances. While many of these excess deaths are a direct result of COVID-19, some are also indirect, such as difficulty accessing care for a medical emergency due to impacts on the healthcare system.
  • Last Friday, Estado de Mexico, one of the most populous states in Mexico, began vaccinating children 12 years and older against COVID-19. The Governor cited the return to in-person schooling as a major reason for the move to vaccinate youth. Mexico City is expected to start vaccinating this age group next week.
  • Last week, the CDC reiterated its recommendation that any traveler over the age of 2 in the U.S. wear a well-fitting mask while on public transportation like airplanes or buses or while in a transit hub. CDC Director Rochelle Walensky reminds us that, “Wearing a mask in indoor public transportation settings will provide protection for the individual and the community,” even as the mask mandate, struck down by a Florida judge last month, is not in effect.
