Weekly Update: March 27 – April 2, 2023

A win for workers in the poultry industry: The U.S. Dept. of Labor recovered over $300,000 in overtime pay for poultry catchers in Alabama and North Carolina.
A new U.S.-Mexico Return of Migrant Wages Pilot Program will increase coordination between the Mexican government and the U.S. Dept. of Labor. The program will help to identify migrant workers who are owed wages from work in the U.S. and may have returned to Mexico.

As many migrant workers prepare to come to the U.S. for seasonal work, CDM is offering a workshop in Spanish at 6 PM tomorrow, March 29, to educate workers about fraud and labor rights. Learn more and register here.
Join OSHA this Thursday, March 30 at 10 AM for their U&T Visa Certification Program Kickoff. The program aims to support workers, regardless of immigration status, who report workplace health and safety concerns. Register here.

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition’s Campeona’s Project invites Latina women to a conversation about mammograms and breast cancer detection on Saturday, April 1 at 12 PM. In honor of National Farmworker Awareness Week, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) will host a Cafecito in Spanish tonight at 6 PM to talk about how farmworkers and people living in rural areas can manage their health. Watch the Cafecito via NCDHHS’ Facebook, Twitter or YouTube accounts.

South Carolina has experienced its most intense flu season since 2018. According to the most recent South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control report, the state had 53,876 flu instances and 134 flu-related deaths for the season as of the week of March 5 to March 11.
